Home Opener A Success as Runners Post 5-1 Win
Topeka, KS - It's official, hockey has returned to Topeka.
A solid crowd of 1,737 fans witnessed the RoadRunners starting lineup arrive via limousine at center ice to kick off the new ice age in Topeka. What would follow was a night of big hits, a few tilts, and a home team victory. The visiting Alaska Avalanche tried to steal the show, knocking in a powerplay goal just 2:52 into the game to take a 1-0 lead that would stand through the first 20 minutes, despite the fact Topeka outshot Alaska 18-3 in the period. The second period saw the 'Runners find their groove, starting with Josh Kamrass notching his first of the year to tie the game at 1-1. Team captain John Stoddard put the 'Runners ahead for good at 3:12. Jake Hutt scored to make it 3-1 after 2, before Corey Jendras pumped in two third period goals for the 5-1 win.
The RoadRunners improve to 3-1-1 on the year, and will wrap up the weekend series with the Avalanche on Saturday night at the Kansas Expocentre. The game will be available on local radio in Topeka on AM 1490 KTOP, and streaming video available with B2 Networks.
