'RUNNERS DRAFT PICK COMES FROM BACKYARD
(TOPEKA, KS) - The Topeka RoadRunners didn't have to look far to select their lone pick in the 2008 NAHL draft on Wednesday, selecting Billy Mulligan from the Russell Stover Stars MIdget Major AAA program in nearby Overland Park, KS.
Mulligan, who is described as a "physical, gritty type of player who has leadership qualities" by head coach Scott Langer, put up impressive numbers in the 2007-08 season with 20 goals and 44 assists along with 98 PIM's, second most points on the team. The 5'11", 185 lb right winger was named Offensive Player of the Tournament when the Stars won the Marquette Electricians Fall Classic in October of 2007.
Mulligan's coach at Russell Stover has been Pat Ferschweiler, and he had high praise for Mulligan. "He's got an amazing work ethic, and he'll go through the wall for you", Ferschweiler said. "He's a natural leader and he will be an impact player at the junior level."
Mulligan, who turns 19 in June is a Phoenix, AZ native, and is "jacked" to be drafted by the RoadRunners. He will take the ice to begin the tryout process with the RoadRunners at the June camp in Somerset, WI.
