'Runners Finish Showcase at 2-1-1
Blaine, MN - The Topeka RoadRunners earned 5 of a possible 8 points at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, MN, and now head home for their Home Opener against the Alaska Avalanche on Friday night.
Topeka won the first two games of the Showcase, then on Friday evening ran into a talented US National Development team with a hot goaltender. The RoadRunners skated well and matched the physical play of the USA Under-18 squad, but in the end, USA prevailed with a 3-0 win. Topeka turned around on Saturday to face the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, and fell behind 2-1 in the game, with the lone tally being a power play blast by leading scorer Corey Jendras. Topeka called a timeout and pulled goaltender Bryce Merriam for the extra attacker, and the strategy paid off as Blake Humphrey muscled in his 3rd goal of the young season to tie the game with 7 seconds left to play. No one scored in overtime, and in the shootout, 3 of 5 RoadRunner shooters hit the twine, but 4 of the 5 Phantoms did as well to take the win.
The RoadRunners now prepare to usher in a new era of hockey in the Capitol City of Topeka, Kansas, when they face the Alaska Avalanche on Friday and Saturday nights. Single game tickets are available at the Expocentre Box Office (785-297-1000). There will be live music with "Bridges" in front of the arena before the game on Friday. It is also "Lewis Toyota Night", with the first 500 fans getting a free souvenir from the friendly folks at Lewis Toyota. After the game, specially designed and dated Game Worn jerseys will auctioned off live, right off the players backs. The game will be available on local radio in Topeka on AM 1490 KTOP, and streaming video available with B2 Networks.
