'RUNNERS ROLL TO ANOTHER WIN
(CHESTERFIELD, MO) - Topeka took another step towards their quest for the Robertson Cup when they defeated the Central Division champion Alexandria Blizzard on Thursday by a score of 4-2.
The 'Runners got on the board first when Eriah Hayes fed a pass across to Steve Shafer who slapped it home for a 1-0 lead that Topeka held through the first period, outshooting the Blizzard 13-5.
The second period saw the 'Runners stumble a bit, allowing a game tying goal not just once but TWICE. The first one came just :22 seconds into the period as Mikeal Lickteig snapped home a crossing pass. Topeka tied it up again when Steve Shafer repaid the favor to Eriah Hayes by setting him up with a sweet pass on an odd-man rush that Hayes buried for a 2-1 lead. The Blizzard were able to tie it up with just :24 seconds left in the second as Larry Kincaid was left alone on the back door to tie it up.
The RoadRunners took full advantage of a third period blunder by the Blizzard when Dustin Trail took a swipe at Josh Kamrass that earned him two minutes in the penalty box. Topeka scored just :05 seconds into the man advantge when Aaron Gens drove home a one timer from the blue line for a 3-2 lead. The 'Runners added an empty netter by Reed Seckel to secure the victory. Bryce Merriam turned aside 19 shots as Topeka moved to 2-0 in the Robertson Cup Tournament.
Topeka closes out their round-robin portion of the tournament on Friday night when they face the St. Louis Bandits at 7:30 pm.
