RUNNERS STAY PERFECT WITH SWEEP OF JR BLUES
(TOPEKA, KS) - The longest win streak in RoadRunner history is 7, and this years team will have a chance to tie it coming out of the chute after a perfect showing at the Showcase followed by a weekend sweep of the Springfield Jr. Blues.
After squeaking out a come-from-behind victory in a shootout on Friday night, the RoadRunners on Saturday looked more like the team that dazzled fans and scouts alike at the Showcase. They converted quickly on each of their first two powerplay chances, on goals by Alec Hagaman and Matt Hartmann. Hagaman scored again in the second period for a 3-0 lead, a beautiful piece of puck handling followed by a mammoth wrist shot. Springfield answered with a 5-on-3 power play tip-in by Jon Gaffney but Topeka retook the 3 goal lead with Caleb Wolfgram netting his first of the year, also on a power play. In the third period, Topeka's defense kept Springfield at bay, allowing only 3 shots, but one of them was a gorgeous redirection from the left wing corner by Jeremiah Dargis. Topeka goalie Bryce Merriam stopped 14 shots while at the other end, C.J. Groh stopped 39 in his Junior A debut.
The RoadRunners have a weekend off, then travel to Fairbanks, AK for two games, and then to Wenatchee, WA for three games. Upon returning from that trip, they will have about 2 days to recuperate before boarding a bus for Wichita Falls. Topeka's next home games will be Oct.24 and 25 against St. Louis.
