RUNNERS TOP USA U-17's TO SWEEP SHOWCASE
(BLAINE,. MN) - The Topeka RoadRunners held on for a 3-2 win on Saturday morning over the USNTDP U-17's, improving to 4-0-0 on the year and claiming the Showcase Championship.
After a scoreless first period, Tom Kleidon gave Topeka a 1-0 lead :54 seconds into the second with a bomb from the point. Goals were hard to come by, until Jordan George scored a highlight reel goal ay 8:56 of the third for a 2-0 lead. At 15:34, USA's Bryan Rust scored a controversial goal to make it a 2-1 game, but 1:11 later, Alec Hagaman blasted a shot through the USA netminders arm and body for a 3-1 lead. USA pulled the goalie for an extra attacker and it paid off as they pulled to within 1 with 2:05 left to play. They pulled the goalie again, and Bryon Paulazzo hit the pipe on a chance, but Bryce Merriam and the RoadRunners withstood the furious onslaught to secure the 3-2 win. Merriam made 33 saves in securing his 2nd win of the year.
Topeka now heads home for their Home Opener against the Springfield Jr. Blues Fri and Sat Sep.26 - 27.
