Topeka Needs Shootout To Complete Sweep
Topeka, KS - Hockey fans in Topeka saw a little less offense on Saturday than they did on Friday, but the home team still delivered a win on Saturday night to complete the weekend sweep of the first high level hockey games played in Topeka in over 2 years.
Another crowd of over 1,000 found their way into the Kansas Expocentre to watch the RoadRunners battle the Alaska Avalanche. Eric Artman scored a powerplay goal from the blue line to put Topeka ahead in the first period, but 24 seconds later Alaska tied the game at 1-1. Corey Jendras blasted home his 7th of the season on a power play for a 2-1 lead, but Alaska tied it at 2-2 with 1:05 to go in the first. For the second night in a row, Topeka outshout Alaska handily in the first period, but found themselves in a close game. Two scoreless periods would follow, leading eventually to a shootout, won by the RoadRunners on goals by Jendras and Josh Kamrass. RoadRunners goalie Bryce Merriam turned aside 4 of the 5 shots he faced to help the 'Runners move into a second place tie with Wichita Falls in the NAHL South.
The RoadRunners move to 4-1-1 on the year, and will travel next to Wichita Falls for a showdown with the Wildcats. Both games will be available on local radio in Topeka on AM 1490 KTOP, and streaming video available with B2 Networks.
