ROADRUNNER OPEN CAMP UNDERWAY

RoadRunner Open Camp Underway in Chicago

The Topeka RoadRunners came within a single overtime goal from making the Robertson Cup Finals in May 2014, and their sights are set on reloading for the 2014-15 season, which officially commences in just over two short months. The team holds two open camps during the summer, giving players an opportunity to compete and showcase their talents in hopes of getting the coveted invite to report to Topeka in late August. The first Open Camp was held in late May, just prior to the NAHL Entry Draft, and the second is now underway in Woodridge, IL, a suburb of Chicago. The goalie portion of camp, headed by RoadRunner goalie coach Steve Briere began yesterday at the Seven Bridges Ice Arena, and game competition is underway now. The camp is filled to capacity.

"These camps are an invaluable tool for the construction of a competitive hockey team", explained Head Coach / GM Scott Langer. "We have a great team of scouts who work all year long to identify players with specific skill sets and character, but until we can get them on the ice with our returning veterans, it's not easy to know who will best fit our needs and our culture." He added, "And the best part is when you get players who you may have overlooked who show up at camp and earn their way. Every roster spot is always open for competition, so there's always opportunity for players to impress and earn their way in. We've lost some key players this offseason so there are plenty of holes to fill."

Langer and Briere are joined at the camp by Assistant Coach Josh Kamrass. The camp is also attended by various Tier 3 clubs, giving the players added exposure.

Topeka kicks off the 2014-15 campaign with a pair of home games against the Corpus Christi Ice Rays on Sept. 12 and 13 at Landon Arena. A preseason schedule will be announced on the team website at topekaroadrunners.com when it becomes available. Team news is also distributed via Twitter, via the handle @topekahockey.
