‘RUNNERS STUMBLE IN SEASON OPENER

The Topeka RoadRunners had been running wild in the preseason but ran into a brick wall on Day 1 of the NAHL Showcase Tournament in Blaine, MN, falling to the Motor City Metal Jackets 3-0.

Motor City got on the board in the first period at 13:34 on a powerplay goal by Jon Scorcia on a nice passing play from point to point then down to the weak side where Scorcia drove it home. Topeka controlled the pace and outshot the Metal Jackets 12-3 in that first period, but couldn\’t get the puck past Randy Willis.

In the second period, Motor City doubled their lead on another powerplay goal, this one from Patrick Sullivan, slapping a loose puck upstairs after the initial shot was blocked on the way in. For a touch of insurance, Jon Scorcia scored again on a breakaway with a nifty flip over the blocker of Evan Karambelas with Jacob Poe draped on his back. The 3-0 Motor City lead would stand and end up being the final tally, as Topeka was dealt a rare shutout. The ‘Runners (0-1-0) look to get in the win column on Thursday as they face the expansion Janesville Jets (2-1-0).
