Wildcats Comeback Completes Sweep 4-3
After winning seven in a row, including six straight on the road, the RoadRunners returned to Topeka with momentum to spare. Maybe it’s good they’re going back on the road. Wichita Falls trailed 3-1 before netting the last three goals of the game, delivering a heartbreaker to the RoadRunners 4-3.
Conor O’Neil scored his second goal in as many games at 12:27 of the first period, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 heading into the second. And it was in the second that the RoadRunners made their charge. Brandon Brossoit scored on a power play to tie the game at 4:14. Inside the last three minutes of the period, Tyler Groat pushed Topeka ahead when he beat goalie Evan Cowley at 17:06.
Jerad Tafoya added an insurance goal 7:13 of the third and the RoadRunners had what looked like a comfortable 3-1 lead. Then the rains came. Sam Piazza scored unassisted, closing the gap to 3-2 at 10:22. Rudy Junda, Charles Hemstrom and Sami Salminen blew through the RoadRunners D with Salminen doing the honors, flashing the puck past a helpless Spencer Viele and tying the game at 17:10. Finally, with eight seconds left, Colin Staub ended it with an empty netter.
Fortunately for the RoadRunners, division rival Texas was once again idle so they maintained their five point advantage for second place in the South. The RoadRoadRunners will look to right the ship next weekend at Amarillo. Fans can catch all of the action at Blind Tiger Brewery and Restaurant. The games start at 7pm on Friday and Saturday but get there early as seats are limited.
The team will return to Landon Arena for a three game series against the Tornado (Mar. 22, 23, 24). That weekend is Shriners Weekend with the RoadRunners and there will be a special jersey auction with 50% of the proceeds going to benefit the Shriner Children’s Hospitals. That Sunday will also be Topeka Habitat for Humanity Night. The RoadRunners will be at the Topeka Habitat Restore on Mar. 19 helping to sell tickets and signing autographs.
